Aesthetic & Cosmetic Dentistry in Edinburgh

At Stafford Street Dental Care we like to look on all our dentistry as being aesthetic, and cosmetic.

Yann, Gilly and Sonia have all completed a 1 year course entitled “Cosmetic and Aesthetic Restorative Dentistry”.

What does it all mean?

Definitions

Cosmetic – “relating to treatment intended to restore or improve a person’s appearance”.

Aesthetic – “concerned with beauty or the appreciation of beauty”.

So we like our work to look good, to restore or improve a person’s appearance and then we can appreciate the beauty of it! Equally, we can appreciate the beauty of a smile just the way it is already.

Cosmetic Dentistry has come to mean large interventions such as providing veneers or crowns in order to improve a person’s appearance. This is not necessarily what our patients are looking for…

Aesthetic dentistry is not such a well-used expression but to us it means helping our patients have a natural, healthy smile that they are happy with and confident in. And as it was for the ancient Greeks who invented the term, beauty has to be founded on health.

Aesthetic dentistry is not such a well-used expression but to us it means helping our patients have a natural, healthy smile that they are happy with and confident in. And as it was for the ancient Greeks who invented the term, beauty has to be founded on health.

The very first step to a natural, healthy smile is to have healthy gums.

Sometimes we have to deal with some decay or unsightly old fillings. It is always our aim to make things look better, even though sometimes the only person who can actually see the tooth is us, for example a far back top tooth isn’t easy to see unless you’re a dentist with a mirror in your hand!

Our approach to improving the appearance of front teeth always begins conservatively.

Conservative Treatment

“Align, Bleach and bond” is the 2018 approach to cosmetic dentistry.  If the teeth are slightly rotated or tilted, Invisalign Clear Braces orthodontic treatment can be used to put them into a better place.

Bleaching or Tooth Whitening is a fantastic and safe way to improve the appearance of teeth. Often people think they would like veneers and are then completely happy with their teeth after whitening.

Bonding– means gluing – we can add small amounts of Tooth Coloured Composite to worn or chipped edges to improve aesthetics and proportions. This results in looking younger!

Edges of teeth wear as you get older, making teeth look shorter and squarer, so adding 1-2mm back on makes you look younger. This is possible with composite.

The only drawback with composite is that it can stain over time and doesn’t stay shiny. We can deal with this by polishing regularly with the “Groovy Diamond” polishing brushes. Or…. we can think of porcelain.

Porcelain Veneers and Crowns
The benefit of porcelain is that it keeps a shiny look, and sometimes porcelain is still the very best material to restore worn out teeth, and give them back all the character that they used to have.  The reflection of light back from a great veneer is exactly the same as from a tooth, making it look very real and natural.

We have improved many smiles with Porcelain Veneers and Dental Crowns, after careful consideration of all the previous options mentioned above.

So, at Stafford Street Dental Care, we look on the terms cosmetic dentistry and aesthetic dentistry as being interchangeable.

We seek to achieve great results in as minimally interventive a way as possible, while always being aware of what the patient is actually looking for.
