07 Aug Dental Implants in Edinburgh, Your Questions Answered
Am I a suitable candidate for dental implants?
Dental implants are an ideal solution for anyone missing one or more teeth due to trauma, decay or gum disease. You will need to be in good health, preferably a non-smoker, and your other teeth must be free from decay or gum disease. At Stafford Street Dental Care in the city centre of Edinburgh, we will discuss your individual clinical situation in detail before any treatment.
Why should I have a dental implant?
Missing teeth not only create a gap in your smile, they can also impair your chewing function, so you may not be able to eat a complete diet. Another consequence of missing teeth is bone loss. Your jawbone needs the chewing action of teeth to stimulate it and keep it strong. Where teeth are missing, your jawbone may begin to deteriorate. Dental implants can help to prevent this bone loss.
Are dental implants an alternative to root canal treatment?
Dental implants can be a prudent alternative to root canal treatment where the tooth is of poor prognosis, since implants are not susceptible to decay and almost never break. Root treated teeth, by contrast, can sometimes be very broken down and difficult to repair.
How much pain will I experience?
You should have no pain during your dental implant treatment as you will be treated under a profound local anaesthetic. After the dental implants have been placed, you may experience mild discomfort for a few days, which can be treated with over-the-counter pain relief.
How long does the treatment take?
A single dental implant can be fitted in less than an hour, under local anaesthetic. The dental implant then takes from 8 to 12 weeks to heal with the bone, during which time we can fit a temporary tooth or bridge to fill the gap. Once the dental implant has integrated, your crown, bridge or implant denture can be fitted. Sometimes implants can be restored immediately after placement. If you have poor-quality bone or require bone-grafting procedures, the overall process can take longer. We will advise you on the best surgical procedure for your circumstances.
How do I maintain the dental implant once fitted?
Like teeth, dental implants need to be kept clean and free from plaque, so thorough brushing and good oral hygiene is essential. With support from our oral health team, you can expect your implants to last a lifetime. However, if you are a smoker, the lifespan of your implants may be reduced.
How much will dental implants cost?
Prices start from £2,500 for a single tooth dental implant and from £3,960 for a full dental arch replacement at our Dental Implant Clinic in the city centre of Edinburgh.
