A bridge is a permanent replacement for a missing tooth or teeth. We usually use one of two types of bridge.
Fixed bridges involve quite a lot of preparation to the adjacent teeth and we usually reserve these for cases where you already have crowns either side of the missing tooth. If teeth have had no previous dental treatment then to prepare then for bridge abutments is considered to be quite detrimental and we would prefer to employ a far more conservative technique.
Such a technique would be a Maryland bridge which involves minimal preparation and even sometimes no preparation to the adjacent tooth. This is a great example of MID or minimal invasive dentistry although it does have it’s limitations. For instance, if your bite is very strong or there isn’t much tooth surface to bond on to then the Maryland bridge may not be strong enough.
A full assessment will be carried out to decide whether either of these treatments are suitable courses of action for you.
